Green

The Energy of Green

Green is the colour of growing things. Leaves, grass, herbs, forests and new shoots all carry it, giving green one of its strongest associations: growth.

In colour magic, green is connected with abundance, prosperity, healing, renewal, fertility, luck, balance and our relationship with the natural world. It can represent something beginning to grow, but also the patience required to tend it over time.

There is a grounded quality to green that makes it quite different from the more active energy of red, orange and yellow. Green doesn’t necessarily rush. A garden grows because it is watered, fed and cared for repeatedly, and that makes green particularly suited to intentions we want to nurture rather than force.

Money and prosperity are also strongly associated with green in many modern magical practices, particularly in cultures where green is associated with currency. But abundance can mean much more than money. A full pantry, healthy garden, supportive friendships, opportunities, time, knowledge and a home that feels secure can all be forms of abundance.

Green can have less comfortable associations too. Envy, jealousy, inexperience and even sickness have all been represented by green at different times. As always, its meaning depends on the shade, culture, context and the person using it.

Green carries the energy of something being tended. It works particularly well for intentions that need time, care and steady growth.

The Magic of Green

Green magic is often associated with prosperity, money and abundance. It can be used when saving towards something, looking for new opportunities, growing a business or trying to create greater security in everyday life.

It is equally useful for personal growth. Green can accompany intentions involving learning, changing habits, rebuilding confidence or nurturing something that is still developing.

Its connection with the natural world also makes green an obvious choice for garden magic, plant magic and practices centred around the seasons and the land.

Green can be used for healing intentions too, particularly when the focus is on rest, restoration, renewal and caring for ourselves or others. Magical practices should never replace appropriate medical care, but colour can still be used symbolically as part of comfort, reflection and personal ritual.

Because green sits so strongly between growth and stability, it is also useful when we need to find a sustainable pace rather than racing towards an outcome.

How Green Can Make Us Feel

Green often feels restful because we encounter so much of it in the natural world. It can bring to mind gardens, forests, open spaces and places where we instinctively slow down.

Different greens create very different moods. Pale green can feel fresh and gentle. Bright leafy greens often feel lively and youthful. Olive and sage tend to feel quieter and more grounded, while deep forest green can feel rich, protective and established.

Green can also feel reassuring and familiar, particularly for people who enjoy spending time outdoors or gardening.

But there isn’t one universal emotional response to green. A fluorescent lime green and a soft eucalyptus green barely feel like the same colour, and personal memories and cultural associations will always influence how we experience them.

When to Wear Green

Wear green when you want to encourage growth, steadiness or a sense of being grounded.

It can be a useful colour for work involving money, career opportunities, study or long-term goals. Green can also suit situations where you want to feel calm and capable rather than particularly bold.

For something subtle, try green jewellery, a scarf, handbag, shoes or nail colour. Stones such as aventurine, jade or moss agate can also be carried or worn.

Sage, olive and eucalyptus greens are especially easy to wear when bright green isn’t appealing, while emerald can bring a much stronger sense of confidence, richness and abundance.

Bringing Green Into the Home

Green may be one of the easiest colours to bring into a home because plants have already done most of the work for us.

Indoor plants, herbs on the kitchen windowsill, flowers, branches and foliage can all introduce green while strengthening its connection with growth and nature.

Green also works beautifully through cushions, throws, ceramics, artwork, towels and bedding. Sage and eucalyptus shades can create a softer atmosphere, while emerald and forest green can make a room feel richer and more dramatic.

The kitchen is another natural place for green. Fresh herbs, leafy vegetables, limes and other green foods can become part of the colour of the room without adding any decoration at all.
